It is the left sidebar that I would like to give another background colour.

Hi Nienke,
Go to Appearance -> Theme Options -> Design Options Tab -> Custom CSS paste the following CSS code and Click on save all changes button:
```
#secondary{
background-color: #45a8cc;
}
```
You may chanage this #45a8cc hex color you like.
