Changing the horizontal width of the header

My dear, I need to horizontally increase the width of my header. I have a logo that is centered on the screen, and the left and right arm at side. Did some testing in style.css, but it did not work. Should I be changing the file or wrong lines. Thank you for your attention. José Maria
