It’s a bad practice to edit the theme main code, we recommended you to use this plugin to add code in Header and Footer.

that is not recommended fro AdSense either
i had massive problems with adsense

what you need to do is to install Google Site Kit for wordpress and connect to adsense with that. (I’ve just saved you 3 days of hassle there !!)
