Is there a way to put a widget in the header area? I’d like to add a mail chimp sign up form in the header area.

@Edward Currently, the header does not have the widget area registered. You will have to add that in other widget areas like sidebar and footer sidebar. Or you will need to customize the theme to make the necessary changes, for which you may need to hire a developer.
