Follow up: as a quick fix I had to install Jetpack to get a mobile version up and running. While doing this I discovered that this mobile theme could be interfered with by WP Super Cache – perhaps that plugin is disturbing Interface Pro as well?
Follow up: After uninstalling Ninja Gzip Compression and restoring the .htacess file the problem still remains.
